The Fortification Of Dorchester Heights
Washington was selected after the Battle of Bunker Hill, a tough loss for the Colonists. The Americans lost General Warren as well as hundreds of Soldiers. A couple months after Washington received his position, he showed his intelligence and fearlessness at the fortification of Dorchester Heights. When the Colonists captured the British military materials from Fort Ticonderoga, the Continental Army strategically set the weapons to point them at Boston where the British were encamped.[10] The General of the British army on March 4th in 1776, William Howe, fled to Halifax, New York when all of the cannons were pointed at his troops down in Boston.[11]
George Washington was thinking ahead when the British fled. He knew that the British would flee to New York, so he sent his troops up north. Many of the battles of the war were between General Howe and George Washington. Long Island was another hard battle for the Americans because for every American soldier there was two British Soldiers.[12] For most of the war the British outnumbered the Americans. The British had hundreds of thousands of Soldiers being sent to America from England, while the Americans were going through villages to find people who were willing to fight for their country. Washington knew of this disadvantage and used his smarts and knowledge to takedown the British.
